Who are we?
Why do we care?
What difference does it make?
So many questions and so few answers.
Giving Michigan the Upper Peninsula to settle a dispute about Toledo, Ohio seems pretty silly today. But that’s what happened more than 175 years ago. Michigan benefited from the rich natural resources of the Upper Peninsula for many years.
Now, Michigan is struggling to take care of the mainland cities and devotes less and less to it’s territory up north. With the Flint water crisis and the on-going decline of Detroit, Michigan has it’s hands full.
So, why do we want the UP to go to Wisconsin? Why not just make a new state named “Superior” as has been proposed in the past?
Adding a new state would be an astronomically difficult task. Moving state boundary lines is a much more achievable goal. And really, it makes sense.
